Are you ever doing something around the house and you wonder how things can be simplified?  Well, let’s just say that I’m constantly trying to find tips and tricks to make my life easier and more efficient – especially in the kitchen.  While most people are watching television or even sleeping late at night, I go searching for answers on youtube.
I was cooking one day and as I was slicing my onion, I noticed that the blade on my knife was a little dull.  I own a honing rod and have used it a handful of times.  I have to tell you that I hardly ever noticed a difference using the honing rod so it could be one of 2 reasons – I’m not doing it properly or that it just doesn’t do the trick for me (I really never liked using it anyway).  So I went to youtube and searched “how to sharpen your knives” and searched several videos.  I certainly don’t own a diamond stone so I kept searching until I found a super easy method that actually WORKED!
Here are the simple steps to a sharper knife:

  1. Grab any old ceramic mug out of your cupboard and flip it upside down.
  2. Holding the mug in place with one hand, take your knife and glide it across the grit of the ceramic a few times at a 20 degree angle. Repeat this for the other side of the blade.
  3. Wipe your blade clean, put your mug away and you have a sharp knife again!

This little tip has helped me numerous times and has made my life easier without having a sword fight with my honing rod.  I think I just might use it as a stake for my tomato plant.
Go and try it for yourself!
Take Care,
Antonella
